What is the Mountain Valley Pipeline? |
The MVP is a natural gas pipeline that will extend 303 miles from northwestern West Virginia to southern Virginia. Since this pipeline requires deforestation and extensive land disturbance, increased sedimentation in streams is expected.
|
Potential Pipeline Impacts |
Water Quality Increased sedimentation, stream flow, stream morphology changes
Geology and Soil Effects on unstable karst geology, soil erosion, risk of subsidence Disturbance of Vegetation Loss of habitat, micro-climate impacts due to change in vegetation, ecosystem change, forest loss and fragmentation |
What is Turbidity? |
Turbidity is the cloudiness of a fluid caused by the presence of suspended solids. Turbid water may represent health concerns in addition to unappealing aesthetics.
|
What is Turbidity Imaging? |
Turbidity imaging is the process of using cameras to create a time-lapse series of images. Throughout the day, cameras capture pictures of the water. Using image statistics, the picture's properties are compared, and from there a difference between sites can be quantified.
|
What are Image Statistics?
Image statistics include the average of pixel values, standard deviation and maximum pixel value, etc. Human eyes use red, green, and blue rods to detect light. By combining these colors in various intensities, humans can see a spectrum of different colors and shades. Digital images work on a similar principal. Digital images can be thought of as numeric matrices and statistics can be calculated from this.
